Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Ibrahim Thiaw, visited Khorezm region accompanied by Minister of Ecology Aziz Abduhakimov.

During the visit organized within the framework of the 21st session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (CRIC-21), the distinguished guest visited the historical complex of "Ichan-Kala." The fortress, which has preserved its centuries-old history, national traditions, ancient appearance, and rich cultural heritage, made a profound impression on Ibrahim Thiaw.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations also familiarized himself with the efforts being made to combat drought and desertification in the Khorezm region, particularly with the activities carried out under the national project "Yashil Makon".

For information, as part of the "Yashil Makon" project, 5,168,000 seedlings were planted in the autumn of 2023 in the Khorezm region. Additionally, plans are underway to create 123.8 hectares of "Green Parks" between 2022 and 2024. In the current planting season, a total of 1,647 tree and shrub seedlings will be planted in green areas.

Furthermore, by 2024, it is planned to create "Green Public Parks" covering an area of 144.85 hectares in the region. Currently, 8,995 tree and shrub seedlings have been planted in these areas. Additionally, 37,400 seedlings have been planted in the vicinity of industrial enterprises of categories I and II, which have an impact on the environment.

In turn, the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change plans to establish the "Ministry of Ecology Park" in the Khorezm region. A total of 567 tree and shrub seedlings suitable for the soil and climatic conditions of the region will be planted in this area, including 146 plane trees, 104 Japanese pagoda trees, 33 mulberry trees, 83 elm trees, and 201 rose shrubs.
