During the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Dubai, UAE, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan M. Babaev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan E. Nysanbayev, and Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic M. Turgunbaev, accompanied by the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov, visited the national pavilion of Uzbekistan.
As part of the visit, the ministers of ecology from the fraternal countries familiarized themselves with the extensive work being carried out in the republic to adapt to climate change, mitigate its impacts and risks, initiatives by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on greening the dried bottom of the Aral Sea, the national program "Yashil Makon" ("Green Space"), increasing the share of renewable energy sources, fulfilling the commitments of the Paris Agreement, and achieving carbon neutrality.
Furthermore, during the event, a multilateral meeting of ministers was organized with the participation of the Director-General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), F. Rijsberman, who acted as a potential partner in advancing the green agenda in the countries.
The Director-General of GGGI expressed readiness and interest in providing the necessary support for the phased transition of countries to the principles of a green economy through joint programs and projects.
The ministers emphasized the political will and reforms of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, aimed at strengthening regional interconnectedness within existing prestigious platforms such as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), The Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia, Azerbaijan, and Afghanistan (SPECA), among others, where environmental and climate issues play an important role in shaping the agenda of these organizations.
Additionally, the opening of the Central Asian University of environmental studies and climate change - (Green University) was positively noted, as it serves as a promising platform for training qualified specialists in the field of ecology in the region.
The ministers expressed interest in supporting the initiative of the Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, A.Abdukhakimov, in developing a regional review of environmental activities for the countries in the region.
In conclusion, the parties were invited to actively participate in upcoming high-level international events in Samarkand, including the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14, February 12-17, 2024) and the First Samarkand International Climate Forum (March 2024).
